Brown vs Board of education Reax

 Brown

Kayla: questioned the concept of "separate but equal." After the Cold War, new technologies, such as the radio, emerged. Thurgood Marshall was mentioned, and Brown emerged victorious in the case.

brad: legal argument:  "separate but equal" is deemed impossible. This concept goes against the principles of the 14th Amendment. Black schools are of inferior quality compared to white schools, despite having more students. Resources are transferred from white schools to black schools.

josh: Josh made a religious argument, he referenced a Bible verse, Proverb 14:31. This verse condemned unfair treatment of African Americans, stating that such discrimination goes against Christian principles of unity.

Lindsey: Lindsey provided a historical summary. She mentioned the existence of the separate but equal doctrine and highlighted the origin of the Brown vs. Board case, which began with a girl being denied entry to white schools. The girl's father sued, leading the case to reach the Supreme Court. Lindsey also asserted that the 14th Amendment does not prevent states from segregating places and people.

Lucy: presented a moral argument, expressing that Black children have encountered more illness and violence compared to white people. She emphasized the importance of considering the upbringing of the children. Lucy pointed out that white students who completed high school were more likely to attend college than black students, suggesting that school segregation should be maintained.

Elliot: says that segregation is allowed by the Constitution, referring to the 14th and 2nd Amendments. He argues that while people keep their rights, segregation is needed. He compares it to the rule that felons can't buy guns, saying it's not a violation of rights but a way for the government to keep everyone safe. He thinks segregation is necessary and constitutional to protect both black and white students. On the other hand, he suggests that if we mix schools, felons might get their hands on guns.

both sides of the arguments were very compelling and had great points

EOTO reacts #4

I thought that this trial was the best one we did, we each got to touch base on many different events and people that went on during the regression of African American rights.

Grace Ann: one topic that stood out to me was the assasination of Martin Luther King at the Lorainne motel in Memphis,  James earle Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison.

Gabbie Kusherman: the Boston bus riots were white people protesting segregated buses, they started riots and threw rocks and sticks at black people. this was a horrible and scary time.

Kaycie: discussed the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which was also approved by Lyndon Johnson. This law put an end to poll taxes and discrimination against Black voters, ensuring that everyone had an equal right to vote.

Brad: Redlining refers to the home-buying process with the Great Depression, during which financial constraints made it really hard for people to purchase houses. Faced with limited resources, potential buyers took loans from banks. However, banks choose favorites.

This practice became  very problematic as certain neighborhoods, particularly those owned by Black individuals, were marked with red lines.

kayla: A white man and a black women got married and caught in the middle of the night. They got in trouble because their marriage was against the law since they were from different races. So, they had to leave Virginia. The woman wrote a letter to Congress asking them to make mixed-race marriages legal so that nobody else would end up in jail for marrying someone from a different race. In 1967, Virginia messed up by violating the 14th Amendment when they threw these two in jail.

abby: This case is really messing with the 14th Amendment and causing a big split in the country. Our country was built on the idea that everyone is equal, and that means no slavery or unfair treatment. The rule about "separate but equal" isn't being followed anymore, and that's a big deal because it means colleges can't say no to people just because of their race.

Jonathan: talks about the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This law made it illegal to treat people unfairly in public places. President Lyndon Johnson signed it. People had to fight for their rights through marches and disagreements. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech inspired this law because he talked about treating both white and black people the same way.Civil Rights Act of 1964 - Definition, Summary & Significance | HISTORY

To Sir With love

to sir with love was a very entertaining movie.  it was a film made in 1967 about African American engineer, Mark Thackery.  When he starts a job at a highschool he soon realizes things aren't what he expected. when he introduces himself to the school students and staff members all treated him with disrespect and racism.

To Sir with Love: Braithwaite, E. R.: 9780515105193: Amazon.com: Books

The students arent respectful, the girls aren't dressed correctly for school,  and the boys treated no one with respect.  Thackery realizes that nothing is going to change if he keeps the same traditional teaching style, like math and geography he changes the ciriculum completely. he starts teaching his students about important life and social skills. this starts to shift the way they act towards one another inluding thackery  himself.

this movie also touches a lot on racism. At one point one of the students loses his mom but no one wants to go drop off flowers because they dont want their reputation to be ruined due to the kid being African American. After thackerys lessons they realize it doesn't matter what others think and they all went to the families house to drop off flowers and attended the mothers funeral.

Remembering 'To Sir, with love' at 50

over the course of the movie he hit many bumps and patches but towards the end they all come around. throughout the whole movie he was trying to become an engineer and being a teacher was just a filler job. when he tells the students he is leaving because he gets another job offer they are all upset and try to convince him to stay, he realizes that maybe he is fit to be a teacher after all.

After watching this movie it really shows how much dedication and time teachers put into what they do. They aren't just there to teach students but also to get to know them and create a better life for everyone.  the film really touches on how to be an empathetic and forgiving person.
