Christian slaveholders who argued that slavery was necessary and beneficial have claimed that because God saw certain actions as a sin, it justifies that being a slave is a good punishment, and that slaves must have done something to deserve bad treatment. In the article "how christian slaveholders used the bible to justify slavery" The author discussed how people would talk about God saying "he would rather punish you in this like for your wickedness than destroy your souls for in the next life" The author also explains that if you are patient in the hands of god, he will reward you for it later in heaven. Meaning that those who are selected as slaves, if they are obedient, then they will be rewarded for it once they enter heaven. “Servants be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust” This verse is saying that slaves should be kind and grateful to their masters, even if they are treating their slaves unfairly. Some verses of the bible consider slavery going against God's wishes. For example “Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death.” This quote is saying that if you own another human being it should be punishable by death, which shows that owning slaves is going against the bible. God does not want people owning and selling other people because the bible sees every human as equal. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” This verse is further stating that no matter what religion or race God sees every human as equal and does not want some people being treated differently or being owned by others.
